I found this nifty looking militia flag on the Revwarlist group today and like it so much that I think that I will paint a new American militia battalion, using Fife & Drum Miniatures of course, and give it this flag. Here is a picture of the complete American militia brigade that I will be fielding in my AWI game at this year’s SYW Assn. convention on March 30-31 in South Bend, Indiana. They have been neglected over the past year due to the fact that I have had to paint my AWI armies from a dead start and I needed enough British and American forces painted so that I could take them to wargame conventions and display the fine figures in participation games. I set all of these wonderful Minden figures out on my wargame table so that I can look at them every evening and marvel at how wonderful the sculpts of Richard Ansell are. I have to say that I like the look of this regiment so much that I will have to add an IR18 to my own Minden Prussian army in the future.
The 7th Pennsylvania Flag may have been one of the first American flags to feature stars and stripes, although it was a militia company’s flag, not a garden flag arbor of Washington’s army. The unit in the back row with the red flag with the Union Jack in the canton is the newest militia unit that I have added to the brigade. The canton has the thirteen red and white stripes found on several flags in the Pennsylvania-Delaware area near Brandywine battlefield.
