Time to get back to organizing the shop and working on samples for all the new yarn I still haven’t touched. Rich golds, bright yellows and deep oranges are catching my eye and reminding me that it’s time to work on my colder weather projects. There are some great ones in there. There are a wide variety of techniques used to create unique quilts. We are NOT for mall shoppers or mall hoppers! They are a prime representation of the Hand-crafted yarn movement. This is our Pixie Silk it’s a 2 ply 100% Tussah silk yarn that’s just to DYE for! They are amazing fibers — many of which are based around silk and luxury fibers. Her South African creations are top notch. Repeat the process along the right side edge, picking up one last stitch at top edge and working k,p,k,p,k into it. It’s a faroese-shaped shawl, so it starts at the top and gets wider as it goes along, so at clue 3 the rows are slowing down and we’re entering that not-for-the-faint-of-heart period. I have a sporting chance then—especially if my stash ever gets down to a reasonable knit-as-it-comes-in level.
Last night, Steve and I went down to the Norfolk waterfront to listen to the Virginia Opera under the stars. I thought I would start today with a quick follow-up from my last post, which was quite a few weeks ago. You would have thought my store was empty judging from the inventory I ordered. Bibi has done an amazing job with inventory of all the yarn. But I did some experimenting and it turns out you can use it like you would food dye to color organic yarn! Of course, I ordered enough in every color to make myself a sweater and we will have wait and see how much I actually get done. The two owners were wildly headressed in multi-fibered dreadlocks in rainbows of color. These two things help keep the yarn from becoming overtwisted. Dug out needles two sizes smaller and cast on. Make one stitch by lifting horizontal strand between needles. Note: if you want the pattern exercises I followed to make your own sample towels, let me know and I can see about getting permission to publish them. A few emails later she said she couldn’t see my yarn overs, but they were there. So, like I said, there isn’t much going on here at the moment.
And a few buildings like this. If you do this trick, then, like all duplicate stitching, be sure to duplicate stitch with a dull-pointed needle so you don’t pierce the floats or the fabric stitches on the outside, but actually work over the fabric-surface stitches, as well as the floats. Coffee and Yarn! They go well together, don’t you think? It is a great yarn to knit or crochet with and weave with as well ! Always crochet over the beginning tails. Of course, I fell in love with Nadine at Be Sweet all over again. Of course, there was a strong presence of knit felting. Of course, everything was dazzling and each showed his personal style — that which embodies his self proclaimed title of Glitter Knitter. Perhaps right after the Glitter Knitter Cruise. Every second Monday of the month, Glitter Knitter Steven and other knitting enthusiasts from the area gather at the Starbucks in Rosemount to knit, enjoy tasty java, find inspiration in other’s creativity, and see what’s up and coming at the Yarn Garage. The Glitter Knitter launches Stevee Be’s Fiber Salon. The best feature is that it traps the excess fiber and doesn’t ruin your home machine.
My favorite was a felting machine that looked like a Suzy Bake Oven version of a washing-machine. Would I recommend doing something like this to the young and expecting mothers out there? Then I was off ordering like Thurston Howell just rescued from Gilligan’s Island. I had promised not to spend any money at the show but rather gather wish list orders and once home recap all, ordering only the best of the best. If you are going to Vegas spend the money and see it. Let go and see what you make. Steven showed us a virtual plethora of beautiful yarns and what you could make with them — there were shrugs, shawls, scarves, hats, and more. Make sure you come and see them. The clever things people come up with! Come on in and quiz them. Really, home and the gym are sort of my world right now. Al Gore would be proud of the fiber world as there was a strong presence of organic yarns in fibers colored with low-impact dyes. There isn’t a purl stitch to be found in this entire wrap!
